Violent Video Games- This article was based on the findings of research tests on groups when they were exposed to violent video games and whether the impact was positive or negative. There are three types of studies: experimental, correlational, and longitudinal. In order for a study to be "conclusive" it can not be solely based on just one of the three studies. Meta-analysis (a combo of the three studies) is a technique used to draw general conclusions that aren't based on a single method of research. Many began to believe  violent video games had a direct influence over school shootings, but they had failed to realize that the shooters had several risk factors for aggressive behavior. Lastly, the article goes on to talk about public policy, the three pillars of responsibility, how video games can be used as a tool for education and should not be viewed as an all good of all bad activity.

Weinstein and Tarantino: Weinstein, a long-time supporter and producer of Tarantino's violent films vows to back away from them altogether. He's passionate about what he sales, his company, and about the people and political causes he supports. O'Hehir believes before Weinstein decided to completely back away from violent films he gathered opinions and concerns from other producers as well as studi heads. Some of whom may share his concerns about violence in the media. In some aspects he broke the silence about this discussed topic of Hollywood filmmaking.

Columbine: Marilyn Manson speaks out on who really is responsible for violence in America. Is it religion which is our first form of entertainment, the news, or is it actually music? This article brings to light his real motives in his songs and how he is not afraid to inspire people to be creative and shows them it's okay to break the mold, don't always follow the program. "We're the people who sit back and tolerate children owning guns, and we're the ones who tune in and watch the up-to-the-minute details of what they do with them." He also goes into detail how the media makes criminals "folk heroes", by giving them the attention they went by putting them on every magazine and newspaper cover. With the evolution of the Internet there is no longer an escape from the "mall" that's now America.

I believe all three articles bring their own unique components of the similar argument about violence in the media. There is no set reason why they're there, but we all know violence will always be here! There may be ways to censor it and keep our children from experiencing it before their time. Entertainnt is not to blame for ones individual actions. Media also makes criminals the "heroes" of their time. It's up to us to determine what we think is right and what is wrong. Don't let some rich hypocrites decide your life for you.

Articles 1, 2, 3

Article 1
This article entails about the violence with video games linked to aggression in kids. With this research study it discusses the negative influences on video games and the prior history with them. With different ways, the research that is in the article defined ways on how the kids may respond to anger as quick conclusions to attack and anger towards a person. The whole article helps people understand that there may be anger associated with them but it always depends upon the individual. In my opinion to this article I do not agree with this at all. With my many years experienced with violent video games, I know it does not contribute to any anger at all due to the video game. But I am okay with the ratings of different ages for kids or adults to pay for.

Article 2
The beginning of this article starts with the surprise announcement that Tarantino does not want to make anymore violent movies. Tarantino feels like that violence in the media is rubbing off into the real world and is affecting it greatly. The article gave facts about shootings for 2013 and questioned if it was due towards the media. One more thing is that he talked about his kids and how he did not want them to be in the middle of all the violence. For this article I thought it was interesting on how they formatted it and how they used some examples to illustrate the violence.I just believe that the movies can not contribute to it and that it depends on the individual for what he or she is thinking at the time.

Article 3
For this article Marilyn Manson is stating his opinion on the columbine shooting and reflecting on violence. He also made a few quotes on what he believed "Times have not become more violent. They have just become more televised." With this he is referring to the violence has always been there and people are now getting to see it due to the fact of television broadcasting it.He also talks about how the media twists and turns things to "turn criminals into folk heroes" by telling everything about that individual. In my opinion I believe that the media does try and twist and turn some events into their favor to gain higher views or ratings. Also, with what Marilyn said about the new age of television violence I agree with that statement due to the fact that it is true.

Articles 1-3

The first article was about the relationship between violence in video games and violence in people. The study showed that increased gameplay of violent video games increased violence in teens. I have heard of this study before, and I don't really agree with the conclusion. I used to play a lot of video games both racing and games like call of duty but I don't really have the urge to go racing or shoot people. I think it comes down to kids being guided by parents when playing these games and realizing that it's a virtual reality they're in and not in real life

The second article was about how Weinstein was going to quit supporting violent movies like he has. The article explains that even if you cant relate the amount of media violence to violence in real life, the author says it does seem unhealthy. Even though he's made a lot of money on violent films, famously with his relationship with Tarantino, he says that he can't support the violence anymore because "that's not what he wants for his kids." The article then goes on to explain that we are a society filled with guns, being number one in privately owned firearms. However crime rates have been falling steadily whether or not we have guns or the amount of media violence. I again don't agree about the link between violence in movies and violence in real life. Proving that I feel is the statistics he provides in the article saying that crime rates are falling on a national scale despite the number of guns owned or violence seen in media.

The third article was Marilyn Manson's viewpoint on the shooting in Littleton, Colorado. He says that music is not the blame for the shooting(they were blaming his music). He says that people have always had a tendency for violence and uses the story of Cain as evidence. He says that everyone should be held responsible for their own actions and that the media just looks for a scapegoat so they can idolize the kids who did the killing, as well as other notorious criminals over the course of history. The main point of his article is to point out that we are to blame for our own actions and that killing is killing, whether it be in Vietnam or Jonesboro or Littleton. I liked this article because it was more personal and he was blaming people not the media. I'm in agreement because I think that people will do what they want to do and that media isn't what causes it. If you set a gun on a front porch it doesn't shoot somebody of its own will.

Article One: This article establishes the points of violent video games and how it can influence peoples behaviors and that it has negative effects for people who play them. The study was trying to show that kids or teens who play these games will tend to be more violent in there everyday real life.

They mention all the ways that they came to these conclusions through all sorts of testing and that these games can change how the kids act. I see how one might think this is right but as a person that really only plays violent video games, It has not effected me, at least nothing I am aware of. If you ask me it really depends on the type of people that plays these games. If the person is very impressionable I would believe that playing these games would alter them in some way so you really just have to be carful about it, not everyone is the same.

Article Two: This article states that violence in movies can also have a negative impact such as violent video games in the first article. It talks about movie producers and what they think about all these violent movies and there impact on people who see them. Such as the producer Harvey  Weinstein who doesn't like making these movies because he is one of those people that does think violence has a negative impact in the world. I am starting to see how all of this violence is starting to impact the youth and I think you should know yourself if you can handle it or not. And people can be influenced by these movies, like if you go see a gang bangin movie kids might think that that is cool and want to do that. How ever I think that it is okay, I just went to go see American Sniper this weekend and had some pretty nasty violence in it, But that story is true! It actually happened to someone and depicts the horrors of war and all the hardships that that man went through, taking life's to save life's.

Article 3:This is the perfect example of what I mean by you have to be careful who views these violent games, movies, music and what have you. And these kids were very impressionable and looked up to Marilyn Manson. But I am sure they weren't the only ones that looked up to him. But they were the only ones who looked up to this man (or women) and committed  an act like this. It all matters on the person and how they perceive things. I think this is the most interesting one because I have discussed this topic before and there are lots of documentary's about this, after the shooting I do think the way the media viewed violence changed, the media all ways needs something to blame these things on, In this case the violence that's always around, and in the case of sandy hook, it was gun control. They need something to blame it on and cause controversy.

Article Responses

Article 1.
By far being the most credential based article, Violent Video Games:
"The Effects on Youth, and Public Policy Implications", provided a well sourced and evidence based argument on why video games are potentially harmful for all audiences, and specifically younger audiences. The article goes into detail about the history of violent video games, when they started and how they progressed. The article goes on to explain different research and studies that have been done. Both concluding that video games can be very effective educational tools, that when used negatively may result in influencing  violent behavior. I learned just how conclusive the evidence truly is in support that video games can push at risk people to become potentially violent individuals. This article made me evaluate what types of video games, and media in general, I will allow my children to use. The article speaks on the importance of parental responsibility, and I believe that it is crucial if  we want to end violence. Parents must consider what they're allowing their children to view and how it will effect their cognitive development.

Article 2.

"Violent Video Games: The Effects on Youth, and Public Policy Implications", was designed to be a conversation starter. While avoiding conclusive evidence, this article shared the view of many sides. Including the opinion of Harvey Weinstein. Although viewed as a hypocrite by some, Harvey has taken a stand and opened up media eyes to at least look at the possible effect of media violence. The article speaks boldly about political affairs, and comes off as opinionated. Overall it impacted me by creating at least some skepticism of "conclusive evidence", that isn't quite so conclusive and by making me contemplate our society as a whole and where our violent desires are coming from, and why must we indulge in media violence. This article as well creates an idea of personal responsibility and not just excepting outcomes that we could have control over.

Article 3.
"Columbine: Who's Fault Is It?", in my personal opinion was the most interesting read of the articles. Although most of the content of the article was Marilyn Manson's opinions on media and the origin of violence, I found this article to be the most thought provoking and cause the most internal reflection. Throughout the article Marilyn sheds light on the Columbine shooting, and how his music had nothing to do with it. But more than just self justification, this article leads into who he blames as the culprit of violence. As he said in the article, you could throw a stone at random and hit somebody guilty. We're all apart of the problem, he believes. And I have to say I agree with him. We're so indulged in self gratification that we allowed the media to bombard us with violence, sex, drugs, you name it. And then when we see issues arising in our country, instead of turning inwardly, we look for the black sheep and blame them. Another thing that made me question my own beliefs, was what Marilyn spoke about involving Christianity. I can see where one might draw a death icon from the story of Jesus. And being in a predominantly Christian country, I can see how that might effect all of us especially youth. When taught that punishment is the supreme order of things, we can only act out of self hate or hate for others. There was definitely a lot of contemplative subject discussed in this article, making it for the most impactful and potentially view changing.

Articles 1-3 Bailey Linebaugh

Bailey Linebaugh

Summary: what were their main ideas? How did they structure their essay? What type of evidence did they present?
Reaction: which author did you find most convincing and why? What did you learn that you didn’t know? Which lines up closest to your own beliefs? Did your beliefs or understanding of the topic change at all?

Article 1:
The main focal points of the first article, was primarily focused on how the violence in video games affect the violence in people. The study was trying to show that the more a teen played violent video games but the more the outcome of that teen becoming violent.  This article structured its essay by simply giving evidence such as the studies whether they be correlational or experimental, and specific details on viewpoints and theories.

I’ve always heard of theories like this, and was always told by my parents that playing outside is better than sitting in front of a TV playing video games and this article just makes me further my strong opinion on such exposure to children of such video games. I was raised on a farm and never once played a video game and neither did any of my brothers, whereas I had people I knew in high school that rarely left their bedroom and were very quiet and sometimes even rude to others, and it makes me question whether to link the violent video games to those people. I think that such video games are not meant for children's eyes, especially at a young age, because kids are still developing and learning through observational learning, and the more they see something and see that they get rewarded for it, the more they do it. The more kids watch violence take place in video games and that character gets rewarded for it, the child can potentially act upon those actions. Those are just some of my opinions and beliefs, and not all video games cause this, and not all people act like this, which I understand completely.

Article 2:
This article talks mainly about producers making violent movies and their viewpoints on their works and other producers works. They were more focused on the way they present their violent movies or films and debating whether or not violence in the media is linked to aggression in behavior. It wasn't necessarily about studies on whether or not that argument was true, but hearing different sides of the producers stories behind the makings of their films and personal beliefs. I am still stuck on my opinion that kids shouldnt be allowed to watch violent movies when they are younger, but when they are old enough they should know the difference between what is real and what is not. Now I do believe that there is a huge difference between different violent films, war films are more true story based and are meant for viewers to see the real violence in war and the heroes that have fought for our country, not that isnt always hard to watch, but some films are just films that we question "who would ever come with this stuff", violence that is disturbing to watch and that are pointless to even watch. But these producers do have some interesting viewpoints in why they do what they do and this article made me learn the reasoning to why some producers make violent films and why some are against.

Article 3:
This article was probably the most interesting out all of 3 of them. Even though I would never in a million years agree with Marilyn Manson but a viewpoint he had about the media and entertainment I can relate to.He talked about how the media has given kids no world to see and that everything is publicized and turned into something people just watch. I am a strong christian so I have no comment to the opinions he had on christianity because that will be a whole other paragraph but I do agree that entertainment is ripping this world to shreds. When I was a kid we didnt have iphones, instagram, twitter, ipads, all of the technology that we have now, we didnt have that. And to be honest, life was really good. But now that im getting older im starting to realize what the media has done to this world, and how much chaos it has caused, and how much disturbance it has done to people. This article was the most intersting to read, even if it was from an interesting man. It made me learn more about his inner beliefs and his eyes on the world and what its turning into, it was different than any of the other two articles.

Articles 1,2,3

Article 1: Violent Video games
This article talks about violence and how television and video games can have a negative effect on children . This article briefly talks about history of video games and its negative influences. Also  it goes on by showing different ways that they used to discover if a video game was really violent or not. It also explained the different effects like quick anger when people play video games. In conclusion, the last paragraph sums up on how video games can effect the youth. I personally agree with video games the have a lot of adult content and violence even though they encourage violence. I have mainly all younger siblings so i wouldn't really recommend violent video games to the youth. I'm glad that they have age restrictions on some things like this instead of letting anyone of all ages get a hold of this.

Article 2: Weinstein, Harvey
The main idea about this article starts out with Weinstein saying he feels like he shouldn't make these violent movies anymore because he feels like it might be having an effect on real world violence. He was pretty straight forward with an idea and then gets more in depth as he goes on about the topic. He presents evidence by quoting psychologists and their opinions on if it does or does not effect real world violence. The author doesn't take a side of weather if it does or doesn't affect the world but he takes the opportunity to talk about if the violent movies makes a person less sensitive to real world violence. I think this article is kind of ridiculous because Weinstein isn't comfortable showing to his own kids whats really going on in movies. In reaction to this reasoning, he goes on about our gun control; and how any violent movie we watch, makes us even more violent. This might trigger someone to go get a gun because everyone has one and guns are everywhere.

Article 3: Columbine
In Marilyn Manson's article, he explains how us as people and media are to blame for the violent acts that continue to happen. For instance, he states, "When it comes down to who's to blame for the high school murders in Littleton, Colorado, throw a rock and you'll hit someone who's guilty." Manson also talks about how the media "praises" and post the pictures of the criminals that cause these violent acts all over the media for everyone to see. Manson doesn't blame a single person. He feels that it is our fault as society that violence continues to happen. For some people, that maybe why the commit the crimes that they do. Just so they can be heard and noticed. To me, media will make some one famous, in the wrong way, and hurt others in the process.

Articles 1-3

Articles 1-3

Article 1-
The main idea for this article was explaining how and why video games makes people violent. Its structured pretty straight forward, with a general idea and then gets more in depth as he goes on about the topic. They presented all different types of evidence. They showed research from 1980s 1990s and so on. They compared their research back then to now. They showed comparisons and differences in violent games back then through now. I did this topic my senior year and they had the same points I've already seen. But I don't think these violent video games make you more violent and want to shoot up a school. I play violent video games and I'm fine and so are my sisters. I think the people who do those things are already messed up somewhere inside and they mistake the game for reality. Otherwise we'd have a lot more shootings happening.

Article 2-
The main idea about this article starts out with Weinstein saying he feels like he shouldn't make these violent movies anymore because he feels like it might be having an effect on real world violence. Its structured pretty straight forward, with a general idea and then gets more in depth as he goes on about the topic. He presents evidence by quoting psychologists and their opinions on if it does or does not effect real world violence. The author doesn't take a strong position of if it does or doesn't affect the world but he takes the opportunity to talk about if the violent movies makes a person less sensitive to real world violence. I think this article is kind of ridiculous because Weinstein isn't comfterable showing to his own kids and because of that reasoning he goes on about our gun control, and how any violent movie makes you more violent and it'll trigger someone to go get a gun because guns are everywhere.

Article 3-
The main idea for this article was showing that music isn't to blame for murders and to show that icons aren't to blame either. This article is done in first person by Marilyn Manson. He presented evidence not statistically but more showing us different examples of murders and showing how media will tie what provoked the murderers to kill with anything if it means to blame it on something else to get a sense to why they did it and how it can be stopped. After reading this I never thought about how we put murderers on the cover of things just like we do with famous people. Its giving them so much satisfaction and like he said about the little boy who gets bullied and pushed around at school, now he has someone to look up to. I've never thought of it that way that we are displaying them the same as a good person. This article shocked me most out of all of them just because its all about the little things that everyone overlooks and doesn't think that its causing any harm.

Article 1-3

Article 1
This article was about how violence (whether in video games or in movies and tv shows) has an effect on children. Starting out this violence can be the reasoning for early signs of aggression in many young americans. The beginning of the article presents shows how the violence in video games got started and how it slowed evolved to what it is today. The last half of the article talks about and presents evidence on how the violence in video games can cause anger within the individuals playing the game. Reading this article didn’t change my view on video games. I have played many video games myself, and many shooting games at that. After playing these games I have no urge to take out my rifle and start shooting people or harming anyone. I do believe video games do set something off for certain individuals, but I do not believe that video games are the sole reasoning for people having a lot of aggression.

Article 2
This article was about how Weinstein, a movie producer told the world how he was done producing violent movies. He claimed that if he were a parent, he wouldn’t want to pick out a single violent movie for his children to watch. He also presents his thought on how violent films can cause something to be set off in individuals to create anger in which they wish to inflict upon another individual(s). I honestly couldn’t believe that someone who has created a career off producing violent films has come to realize that what he has been doing has a negative effect on a very low percentage of people, but he was willing to stop that to help prevent that low percentage of people from ever existing. I have watched countless violent movies throughout my life, and I will admit that after I watch a racing movie, I want to go drive extremely fast, but never have I wanted to go kill someone after watching a violent movie. Maybe Neal H. Mortiz should not release the seventh Fast and Furious movie to prevent people from speeding.
Article 3
This article is all based on Marilyn Manson and his view on how the violence in the media is effecting the youth’s behavior in today’s society. The media has been known for stretching the truth a tad and adding useless details that just make the perpetrator seem worse than they actually are. Marilyn speaks of the school shooting where the suspects were dressed in all black and wearing makeup such as he does. I don’t believe that Marilyn was all to blame but he had to have played a role in what happened that day. Many adults love Batman, but not once have I ever heard of a school shooting where the suspect was dressed as Batman just out of love for the character who fights criminals and saves lives. Marilyn’s music and character had to have had a negative impact on the kids who did the shooting. I do agree with him that the world is changing for the worse, but I certainly don’t believe that his lifestyle didn’t have an effect on what the kids did that day. I have never seen a case where a woman dresses as Carry Underwood and goes and blows up a building full of innocent civilians.

Reaction/Summary 1,2 & 3

Article 1: Violent Videogames
This article talks about violence and how television and video games can have a negative effect on children . The first couple of paragraphs talk about history of video games and its negative influences. Then it goes on by explaining how different methods were used to discover if video games were really violent or not. It also explained the different effects like quick anger when people play video games then the last paragraph touches on how video games can effect the youth. I personally don't agree with video games the have a lot of adult content and violence because they encourage violence. I have younger siblings that I wouldn't want to get ahold of these certain  games. I also feel if your of age then it's okay to play these certain games.

Article 2: Weinstein, Harvey

This article was about a film producer name Havey Weinstein a film producer who went on CNN and announced that now he was no longer going to produce any more violent movies. He believed that the movies people where watching had an affect on them. He explained he wouldn't want his children to watch these types of violent movies he felt  if he produced any more violent movies he will become a hypocrite. "since we can't even agree whether guns cause violence there's little hope...." I personally enjoy these movies. I also understand that everybody cannot handle the amount of violence.

Article 3: Columbine
This article was about Marilyn Mason and what he had to say about the Colorado school shooting. "It is sad to think that the first few people on earth needed no books, movies, games or music to inspire cold-blooded murder." This quote explains that we were able to be cold blooded murderers without any inspirations like music or books. The media points fingers and tries to find ways to get around situations. Was the cause of this murder from inspirations. There was investigation done that showed the killer listen to very violent music. At first I felt that Marilyn Monroe's music was very violent but once reading his perspective I definitely understand where he's coming from. I believe that Marilyn Monroe has a lot of good plates and I might just give his music is shot.
Article 1: Violent Video Games
This article talks about the relationships between violent video games, and youth violence. I enjoyed reading this article because it gives the history of gaming. When violence was first introduced to the gaming-world it allowed players the opportunity to become someone else, and never get in trouble for their actions.  The first big game to raise a lot of publicity was Death Race in 1976.  Shortly after many game designers moved their attention to what was trending in this fantasy world.  The answer would soon be revealed, “we love violence.” This would revolutionize games completely. Everyone was trying to achieve the most realistic game play, where the person would actually feel as if they were there (first person).                            I think in some cases violent games do give bad people bad intensions in the right situation. Someone who is willing to do it in real life never needed a video game to push him or her into doing something evil. I think it would have happened down the road anyways. Personally I see video games as a stress relief, could be viewed differently by other.
Article 2: Weinstein, Harvey
This article was about Harvey Weinstein; a filmmaker that would vow to never produce a violent film again. It also goes into the amount of crime we have in this country, and compares it to other surrounding countries.  We have “an estimated 89 firearms per 100 citizens.” And have the lowest level regulations on our firearm sales. I feel the same way about video games as I do with cinemas, the person committing these horrible crimes in real life cant put the blame on a fake visual. That person is just not right in the head, and is selfish for taking innocent lives.
Article 3: Columbine
America loves to find an icon to hang its guilt on.”  This article was Marilyn Manson’s voice after the Colorado school shooting. I really liked this read because he took all views and pulled them together. How the showcase (shootings) wer broadcasted on every news cannel didn’t even faze half the united state population. We were more worried about our favorite shows. We all play a huge role in the change this nation needs, we need to focus on making our selves better before judging others.  Maybe start highlighting more positive things on the news, ever since I can remember death was on the television.
