Columbine: Whose Fault Is It? Summary
In this article, Marilyn Manson writes about how the Columbine High School massacre may have been caused by the amount of violence in the media. He says, "Times have not become more violent. They have just become more televised." He explains the impact of media coverage of negative events and how the media has "turned criminals into folk heroes". He also explains that it's wrong of the media to try to blame one certain thing for the event, even though we should look toward ourselves for the blame. While I believe that there is a larger amount of negativity on television than is necessary, I don't think it's entirely the media's fault; they're just trying to let people know what's going on. My beliefs and understanding of this topic didn't change at all, since I've been aware of violence on TV and in video games, which I play quite often. The violence doesn't really bother me like it does other people. I've just accepted media for the way it is.
